What is Narrative Therapy?
Narrative Therapy is a therapeutic orientation that helps people see themselves as separate from their problems. It takes a respectful, non-blaming approach to counseling which helps people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from the client and assumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of stress in their lives. With children, it may take the form of creative story telling, Lifebook creation, and play.
What age children do you work with?
Susan specializes in working with boys ages 5 -10 and girls ages 5 - 14 trying to make sense of grief, anxiety, and adoption. Counseling is Attachment oriented and protective of the parent-child relationship. For that reason, at least one parent must be available to participate in the therapy session.
Are you a Registered Play Therapist?
While Susan is not a 'Registered Play Therapist' she does utilize play in my sessions. Unlike traditional play therapy, sessions offer structure and direction. Because of this, children usually exhibit better emotional regulation and relief from stress and anxiety within 6-8 weeks of therapy.
What does a typical session look like?
Typically, parents meet with Susan prior to their child's session. This allows for parents to freely express their concerns and frustrations without causing shame or embarrassment to their child. With young children parental involvement is requested during therapy sessions. Older children and teens can decide if they want parents present and family communication is encouraged and supported. Depending on age, sessions run from 30-50 min.
What about adults?
Counseling is available with adults struggling with a variety of issues including anxiety, life transitions, post adoptive healing, and overcoming childhood trauma. Sessions are 50 min in length and often begin weekly moving to bi-weekly or monthly as clients request.
Are you a Christian Counselor?
Susan is Christian Counselor from a very diverse family. She works with Christians and Non-Christians, shaping the counseling experience according to the desire of her clients with respect to their spiritual orientation and journey.
What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction?
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction or MBSR is a mindfulness approach to wellness and mental health that acknowledges the mind-body-heart connection. Using this approach, clients gain strategies to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression through intentional relaxation and mindset.
Do you take insurance?
Susan does not file insurance at this time but has been approved as a provider with several Insurance Companies. She is happy to provide clients with a 'SuperBill' so that they might receive reimbursement from their providers.
What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram is an ancient personality typing tool that assist individuals, couples, and professionals discover their core motivations, communication styles, and conflict management strategies. Susan uses this tool as a Certified Enneagram Practitioner to help clients develop self awareness & strategies for managing stress in themselves and their children.
